SDG 16: PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

Governance and staff and student representation

Governance bodies

The bodies involved in defining the School’s strategy, academic programs and research are made up of a variety of players from different backgrounds in order to ensure that the School’s various stakeholders are well represented: students, alumni, faculty and researchers, administrative staff, companies, academic players, and public authorities.

Students are particularly sought after to give their opinion on student life and the School’s strategy. They sit on the following bodies: the School Board of Trustees (2 seats), the Teaching and Learning Committee (2 seats), the Student Advisory Council (10 elected students), the Student’s Union Office, the Student Life Committee (2 elected students per class), the Maisel Board of Directors (3 elected students) as well as the Campus Restaurant Users’ Committee (2 elected students).

The governance bodies of the School are divided into three categories:

The variety of actors and committees reflects the desire of IMT-BS to remain as close as possible to the academic, professional and institutional realities in order to provide students with an education that is in line with the job market and the projects of common interest with its external stakeholders.

Compliance with the European Data Protection Regulation (GDRP)

GDPR policy at IMT-BS

As part of its efforts to comply with the requirements of the GDPR, IMT-BS is constantly working on the constitution of its register of processing operations, which have evolved significantly because of the new practices put in place in the context of the health crisis. In this regard, the School is careful about the contractual elements that ensure the respect of its students’ privacy, by integrating RGPD clauses in contracts with service providers, especially for online services (exams, interviews, etc.).

With the support of the DPOs of the IMT schools, IMT-BS has participated in the drafting of a general data protection policy intended for candidates/students and employees/external contributors.

IMT-BS has also started to formalize a policy for the archiving of documents.

Data Protection Management: the programs offered by IMT-BS

Specialized Master Data protection management

This MS Data Protection Management aims to train DPOs (Data Protection Officers), who are the new key persons in charge of defining and implementing the personal data protection compliance policy within organizations (GDPR). For the past 3 years, IMT-BS has trained:

The MS DPM is registered with France Compétences and as such, it is a recognized training program on the job market. The program delivers a level 7 RNCP title registered with France Compétences and is also labeled by the CGE as a “Specialized Master”. It thus delivers 75 ECTS credits and allows students to obtain a degree equivalent to a Bac+6 (6 years of higher education).

THe DPO clinic

The MS DPM DPO Clinic offers free information to organizations on their obligations in order to help them comply with the GDPR and, more generally, to answer their questions on the implementation of personal data law. In so doing, this clinic is an integral part of the training of our students as it puts them in a real-life practical situation that enables them to put their knowledge and expertise at the service of economic actors. This is done under the supervision of MS DPM professors.

Data transparency and publications of the school

Every year, IMT-BS releases public reports to provide an account of its activities:

IMT-BS also submits on a regular basis self-assessment reports to the following accreditation bodies: CEFDG, AACSB, AMBA, Qualiopi, Conférence des Grandes Ecoles, etc.

Within the School, the results of satisfaction surveys, the social report, and any other survey concerning the School are shared with the staff.

Academic freedom and scientific integrity

Academic freedom of the faculty

In accordance with French law, IMT-BS guarantees the principle of independence of its faculty members in their teaching and research activities.

Decision No. 83-165 DC of January 20, 1984 of the French Constitutional Council:

“the functions of teaching and research not only allow but require, in the interest of the service itself, that the free expression and independence of personnel be guaranteed by the provisions applicable to them” (cons. 19)

“regarding professors, (…) the guarantee of independence also results from a fundamental principle recognized by the laws of the Republic” (cons. 20).

Article L952-2 of the Education Code (Amended by LAW No. 2020-1674 of December 24, 2020 – art. 15:

« Professors and researchers enjoy full independence and freedom of expression in the conduct of their teaching and research activities, with the reservations imposed on them by the principles of tolerance and objectivity, in conformity with university traditions and the provisions of this code.

Academic freedom is the guarantee of excellence in French higher education and research. It is exercised in accordance with the constitutional principle of independence of the faculty members.”

At the European Union level, academic freedom is guaranteed by Article 13 – Freedom of Arts and Sciences, of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. This charter is legally binding since the Lisbon Treaty.

Scientific integrity

In accordance with decree No. 2021-1572 applicable to public institutions contributing to the public research service, the IMT has appointed a Scientific Integrity Referent (RIS) in charge of the implementation of the scientific integrity policy. A network of scientific integrity delegates in each IMT school is being created.

Scientific integrity at the IMT

Sanctioning of plagiarism

IMT-BS prohibits plagiarism, that is why it has adopted a Non-Plagiarism Charter. Any use, in a document submitted by a student as his/her personal work, of printed or electronic material or excerpts from such material, without clear and explicit quotation of the sources, origins and authors of the material, is thus considered as plagiarism. This applies to any work submitted by a student or a group of students: presentation, written assignment, thesis, group project, etc. Plagiarism is a violation of intellectual integrity. Like forgery, it is a form of theft. The plagiarist steals ideas from someone else and makes them appear to be his/her own ideas.
